Making the right choice: different dogs and their different food needs

23rd April 2018

Choices regarding what our dogs eat can often be a little overwhelming; we love our pooches, and we want to make the right decisions for them. In choosing our dogs’ meals, there is almost never a ‘one size fits all’ answer - there are a number of factors to be carefully considered, some of which are listed below.

Size

Perhaps intuitively, size greatly affects the kind and quantity of food we will choose for our dogs. Large and small dog breeds have highly varying nutritional needs. Perhaps less intuitively, small dogs may often require more calories per kilo than larger dogs, because of their higher metabolisms. Bigger dogs often require diets to help prevent certain health issues.

Daily activity

Similarly to humans, daily activity and exercise has an effect on our dog’s energy levels. Working dogs for example, have unique nutritional needs that must be met.

Age

As a general rule, dogs are considered ‘mature’ when they reach the age of seven (7) ages. Often at this point, their nutritional needs will change. Senior dogs usually require a reduction in daily calorie intake, in order to prevent the massive issue of obesity in older dogs. At this stage their energy requirement is reduced and due to a slowing metabolic rate, becoming overweight is much more common. Often senior dogs tend to develop digestive issues such as constipation, so an increase in fibre intake is required. There are a number of health issues that may arise with age, it is important to chat to our vets regularly about the changing nutritional needs of our aging pups.

At the end of the day, the right food decisions for our dogs are ones that satisfy their nutritional and health needs, while keeping them happy. It’s important to keep in mind that the right foods may change, so it’s vital we stay adaptable in finding the mix that works best.
