Dog food ingredients and nutrition: why what your dog eats matters.

5th March 2018

Now more than ever we’re seeing just how important it is to know what we’re putting in our food and in our bodies. Research has shed the light on how vital a wholesome, balanced diet full of fresh ingredients is for a well-functioning body and mind.

For the dogs in our family, this is no different!

A balanced diet full of natural ingredients provides your dog with all the nutrients essential for the maintenance and functioning of the entire body system. Ensuring that your dog is being nourished with naturally sourced vitamins and minerals is key to their overall health and wellbeing. These nutrients can be sourced from a variety of different ingredients.

So what does a balanced, nutrient-rich diet look like for my dog? Great question!

Just like there is no one-fits-all diet for people, there is also no one-fits-all solution for our uniquely built pets. However, whilst our dogs may vary in needs and tastes, there are some key nutrients that are important to make sure your dog is getting in their daily diet.

Protein

Protein is a fundamental nutrient needed in any dog’s diet. Protein is made up of amino acids, also known as the “building blocks” of protein. Not only are amino acids a potent source of energy, but they are also key in maintaining healthy body tissues such as muscle, hair, organs and bones. Great sources of protein include: Chicken, beef, lamb, fish.

Fats

High-quality sources of fats and fatty acids. These healthy fats are important in promoting healthy skin and fur coat, as well as for absorbing essential vitamins for a strong immune system.

Great sources of fats and fatty acids include: fish oils, poultry oils.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates provide an excellent source of energy. Fibre and glucose are two types of carbohydrate and are fundamental in promoting a healthy digestive.

Great sources of carbohydrates include: Whole grains such as rice, barley and oats.

Vitamins and Minerals

Vitamins and minerals are necessary for the optimal functioning of your dogs’ body. Minerals such as calcium and phosphorus are great for teeth and bone strength, as well as for promoting tissue and cell development. Vitamins also help to promote a strong metabolism and immune system, along with aiding the maintenance of overall health and wellbeing.

Great sources of vitamins and minerals include: Leafy green vegetables such as Spinach and carrots,.

Our dogs deserve the very best when it comes to their nutrition. By making sure their diet is full of natural, nutrient-rich ingredients, we’re providing them with the best possible foundation for their ongoing wellbeing and development.

If you do have any further questions or concerns about what’s right for your dog, make sure you chat to your local veterinarian.
